The client needed more capacity, but couldn’t afford downtime. MDP delivered a pragmatic, well-resolved design that extended the existing hospital by five additional beds, while also refreshing the main entry. Every detail was carefully considered to ensure construction could proceed without impacting daily hospital operations—resulting in a facility upgrade that looks and feels like it was always there.

Secondary Explanation

Design Approach

A key focus was continuity—of architecture, operations and experience. The design had to integrate seamlessly with the existing structure, preserving a consistent look and feel across old and new. Just as importantly, the project needed to be unobtrusive to staff, patients and visitors—requiring staging that allowed the hospital to function without interruption during construction.

Working within an active hospital always adds complexity—especially when the project scope appears deceptively simple. Every stage of the five-bed extension and entry refurbishment had to be tightly managed to ensure access, safety, and day-to-day hospital operations were maintained. MDP developed a staging plan that balanced efficiency with sensitivity, minimising patient impact while keeping the program on track. Accessibility upgrades for new office areas added another layer of complexity, which we resolved in close consultation with the client. The result: zero shutdowns, seamless progress, and a highly functional, polished result.

"Catherine has just left & was happy with the build. She was very impressed with the quality of workmanship & I plugged both Architect & Building Companies." and "Thank you all for the excellent job done, it is greatly appreciated."

What They Said

Testiary Explanation

Client Communication & Project Success

Clear, ongoing communication was central to this project’s success. From early planning through to the end of the defects liability period, MDP remained deeply engaged with the client and contractor, managing expectations, coordinating works, and keeping variations under tight control. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive—with the General Manager noting the quality of workmanship and expressing thanks for the project’s delivery. With minimal defects at handover and no interruption to hospital services, this extension stands as a quiet success—elevating capacity and improving access without ever compromising on quality or continuity of care.

MDP led this project from briefing through to completion, handling both architecture and project management responsibilities. Our role extended beyond design—we managed the tender, coordinated staging, and superintended construction through to a clean handover. Though modest in scale, the project’s constraints demanded a nuanced approach. Our ability to listen, adapt, and deliver with precision meant the hospital not only gained five much-needed beds, but did so without disruption. The new works match seamlessly with the existing fabric, future-proofing the facility while preserving its calm, clinical functionality. Quietly confident—just like the care it supports.
